CHAPTER 17

Darren crept toward the window and pulled back the curtain. There was no way he could see outside of the thickly snow-covered window.

He let the curtain swing back into place and headed toward the front door. Nina lunged forward and grabbed the back of his shoulder, spinning him to face her.

“What are you doing?” she squawked.

“I’m going to see what made that noise,” Darren said, shrugging himself free.

Nina was shaking her head vigorously. “No, no, no!”

“Wait,” Cam said, gesturing toward the mantel. “Take a gun.”

“Good idea,” Darren said.

Ranger grabbed one of the guns without noticing that one was missing. Whoever moved them to the mantle must not have noticed either. It was a bit peculiar that Cam hadn’t questioned the missing gun after I’d first taken it, but perhaps he thought Darren or Ranger had it somewhere for when they kept watch.

They didn’t need to know that I had it or that it was hidden away in my bedroom. If anyone besides Nina found out, they’d probably find it awfully suspicious I’d taken it without telling anyone. Maybe they’d even think I was the serial killer.

Ranger handed the gun to Darren and followed him to the front door. Darren placed his ear against the front door, listening before reaching up to unlock the door.

“I thought you had a rule about not letting the cold air in?” Daphne muttered.

“Shh,” Annie said soothingly. “They have the heater running. It’s okay.”

“Nothing is okay,” Daphne spat, stopping her circles to stare at the front door. “Is this where we all die?”

I sped out of the living room and popped up next to Darren. I looked into his eyes.

“Are you sure about this?” I asked as my breaths hit me rapidly. “It could be that group of people.”

“That wasn’t the sound of a group of people,” Darren said.

I slid my body between my brother and the front door. “I don’t know, Darren.”

“Kenny,” he said, placing his hands on my shoulders. “I’m not going to let anything happen.”

He moved me to the side before dangling the gun in the space between us. Ranger grabbed my hand and stood in front of me like a shield as Darren twisted the doorknob.

Darren jerked the door wide open and aimed the gun in several directions, shifting from side to side as he looked for the source of the noise. Sheets of snow blasted into the house as the wind whipped it around in swirling, fluffy tornadoes.

There wasn’t anyone standing outside the door.

Darren took several cautious steps out into the cold blizzard, keeping the gun up as if he had police training. The thick wave of snowflakes covered his hair and stuck to half of his body.

“Oh, shit!” he said, taking several steps back toward the house.

The scrawny gray wolf’s eyes glowed as it stalked toward Darren. Glistening drool dripped down from its fangs as it released a guttural growl.

Darren aimed the gun at the wolf, but he didn’t shoot. The wolf stopped following as Darren got closer to the door.
